1. How long has it been since your stew pot saw fresh meat?

These are hard times.

Not since Sunday.

I remember when travelers from Fairview came here and there was coin in every pocket.

A man tries to do right by his family, but these are hard times.
2. Do you see any pigs on the pig hooks?

Nay.

Not one.

Sadly, no.

Ham would be a welcome sight.
3. What of the library façade?

Another promise made and broken by George Reilly.

It shames us all to leave it in that condition.

No funds to repair the library, yet our taxes rise each year.

That temple of knowledge deserves better.
4. I believe this county’s best days are ahead. But it’s going to need a natural leader with impeccable moral character and the backbone to stand up to the railroad.

Aye.

Who else should speak to the railroad, if not the commissioner?

We need a godly man.

Someone has to put those Winston fat cats in their place.
5. Prosperity, plenty, progress! These are but hollow words from Reilly’s lips. Will you be fooled again?

Nay! It’s time to give Reilly the boot.

I didn’t want him to begin with.

Reilly’s heart is in the right place, but running this county is beyond his ability.

Only a fool touches a hot stove twice.
6. I ask you all for but one favor: to think about what kind of tomorrow you want for the county. Do you want the fields ripe with wheat? Do you want the mine filled with busied men, earning a fair wage for a day’s work? Do you want the barge to come weekly?

Aye!

Our children deserve it.

That’s what we all want.

Of course.
